Roaring Twenties

The 1920s opened the door for the democratisation of fashion. Department stores started offering machinemade clothing at low prices.Women got rid of the corset and dressed themselves in a new masculine fashion.
While patterns kept simple, colors and trims got more and more elaborate. The invention of artificial fibres brought up a variety of new fabrics, such as viscose and acetate. Evening dresses were heavily beaded and embroidered. Fringe, lace and pleats were popular trims for plain dresses.
The silhouette was completely tubular, dresses got shorter and the waist dropped down to hip level. Jersey dresses and long, knitted jumpers accentuated the fashionable slim and curveless bodyshape.
For evening wear sleeveless dresses with deep back necklines became popular. Coats of heavy fabrics like velvet or fur with long shawl collars provided warmth.
The cloche hat was the must-have accessory of the period, same as long-handled purses and gloves. The fashionable woman wore a minimum of soft jersey underwear. Jewelry was rarely seen, the daily use of make-up became commonly accepted.
